THE WICK
The wick, that
piece of cord we think has no great value and which is possibly the cheapest
part of all, must also be considered. Since without a wick the oil inside the
lamp won’t get to fulfill its purpose, if there’s no wick, the pressing of the
oil makes no sense. The wick is necessary.
Then, what is it?
In a lamp, it is
that thread through which the oil surges from the inside of the lamp towards
the outer world where darkness reigns. The wick is the only link; there’s no
other connection between the oil in the lamp, which is needed for the light
and the outside that ought to be blessed by that light.
The apostle John says in his Gospel (John 1,9): “That was the
true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” He
was talking about Jesus, the Son of God, who once said when praying to God His
Father: “You prepared a body for me”. Jesus was the first wick.
His life among men was the first wick that joined the Spirit of the Word with
the men who dwelt in darkness, letting God’s light to shine over them.
There was a need
for a body that would stand on two worlds. On God’s , which is impregnated with
His Divine Spirit, and at the same time, on the one men walk on. Jesus
fulfilled this two-end need. The cord of the wick was the body of our Lord
Jesus, walking on this earth. But it also represents our own being.
It represents each member of the Church of Jesus,
whose one end is inside of the Word of God and submerged in the oil of His
Spirit, while on the other side it confronts the world in darkness, to shine
into it. But remember a little fact: The wick doesn’t shine because it is a
wick; it won’t shine if it is not impregnated with the oil. Neither will the
Christian show any heavenly glory just because he is a Christian; but if this same Christian gets impregnated with the
Holy Oil, there will indeed be light of God flowing against the darkness.
Nonetheless, although much more will be consumed of the oil than of the
wick, since the Lord’s giving of Himself to mankind is far greater than ours,
and the wick lasts for many fillings, that light will only be able to shine and
break the darkness if the oil does get a wick; that is, –what a thing!– only if a cord can be found that will agree
to be made a wick.
Our being, with our spirit inside the Spirit of the Word of God, and
accepting to be impregnated of Him can become a wick.
Let us just make things clear: The wick will not be only my being, but
it is my being, if it accepts to live like Jesus lived and maybe even to
die like He died. My being becomes a wick when it accepts to be dipped into
the same spirit of surrender that exists on the Divine Oil. It is my being
when it accepts to be like the grain of wheat that falls on the ground and
dies. When it accepts to take his cross and follow Christ. The Christian is a
wick when he accepts to surrender and to deny himself, to die to himself. And
God won’t force anybody into that. Those steps are taken voluntarily.
Because there is this fact: When the will is surrendered, the light will
shine, but that light will come forth from the fire sitting on the imbibed
wick. And as it happens when any fire is lit, something gets burned. God’s fire lit on a lamp will not only
consume the oil, but the wick as well. It will slowly be transformed into
ashes. The people all around will enjoy life and light, but the destiny of the
wick is the same one the oil has. They will be consumed. The flame will turn
the oil into smoke; the wick will become ashes. That’s why God won’t force
anybody into that.
The fire of God requires the wick of our consecrating ourselves to Him
to be able to illuminate through us to other fellow men and women, but the
glory of the strong light will always belong to the oil.
There is a reality: There are many that have beautiful lamps, and there
is oil inside of them, but they don’t give light because they don’t have the
wick, the disposition to be consumed together with their Lord.
The Word of God
in my being, with His Oil filling me, will concede me the possibility of
walking according to the Will of God, but there is that requisite without which
there will be no light for others, without which all that there is from God in
us, the Word and the Spirit, stay inside and give no fruit. I need to give
myself up to them if they ought to bless others through me.
I am only an
unimportant wick, but when I surrender in obedience and accept to be consumed,
I will burn and His light will shine for others.
